Working Together Should Always be the Goal

During my years at Ocean Park, I learned more and more about leadership and the importance of support from the top. One learns quickly that very little is accomplished without support from the top. While I was fortunate to have support from my team, I was equally fortunate to have support from the CEO.

Building confidence with your supervisor paves the road for your success.

At any level of management, there is always a level of supervision above. If they have confidence in you, they would guide you whilst supporting your ideas and actions. My success today comes with the team that supported me, but in no small way is also a result of the support from the CEO. He always provided me the flexibility to express my ideas, strategies, and actions. His style of leadership was to extract the best from his managers and provide them with the guidance to execute. He allowed me to act. His many successes come from the successes of his managers.

We met every day to review and discuss opportunities. If there were no opportunities to discuss, we shared some anecdotes and together enjoy a few laughs. When there were opportunities, these were always accompanied with suggestions and recommendations for improvements. At the end, the conclusion was how and when to proceed. This was leadership through teamwork.

An understanding and supportive CEO is everything.

We walked together regularly each day throughout the property, accumulating lots of steps on the FITBIT. More eyes always yield better results. We see more together, often with different perspectives that lead to different solutions. The goal was to work together, understand the opportunities together, and execute together. Management and leadership does not happen in the seclusion of an office, it happens with the customer and where business is conducted.

With no surprise, I always led my team in the manner I was led by my superior. I manage my team in the same way the CEO managed me.
