Last month, I was approached by a dear friend who has become a very successful YouTuber for an interview. His followers have grown substantially since launching his first interview and continue to strengthen. It started in Taiwan and Hong Kong and now has spread rapidly in S.E. Asia. His interviews have covered diverse subjects and industries with various seasoned professionals. I was flattered when he requested to interview me about my time at Ocean Park Hong Kong and the story behind the Park's success at that time.
As I always want to share my experiences to help inspire and motivate future leaders in tourism and hospitality, especially in attractions, I enthusiastically accepted the invitation.
Our industry needs enthusiastic and inspired professionals to continue its expansion in the future.
Ocean Park enjoyed its best years of performance and growth in its history during the 15 years from 2000 to 2015. It was a little-known, regional park in Hong Kong that would eventually be recognized as one of the best in the world (2012 IAAPA Applause Award). Its annual attendance grew from 3 million to 7.5 million and its annual revenues steadily grew from HK$300 million to HK$2 Billion in those 15 years. It was a success story that garnered interest globally and was the topic of several case studies from renowned business schools. Staff numbers grew from 600 to over 3,000 and more when special events like Halloween Bash were offered. As its annual attendance and revenues consistently broke records in consecutive years, Ocean Park became a world-class facility and was highly recognized globally, especially in Asia.
There were many reasons for the success of Ocean Park. While there were numerous successful sales and marketing, management strategies and actions, I wanted to focus on the people who created the success, the staff. Hardware is easy. If you have the money, you can buy or build “anything.” Software, the human resources, is more difficult. Software will always drive Hardware.
Without the people to manage and provide valuable service, there can be no success.
I was enthusiastic about the interview and the chance to pay tribute to all our colleagues who made the journey so amazing. We did it together, to create the success that we all enjoyed and appreciated. From the Chief Executive Officer who led all of us to the Sweeper who kept the grounds clean, the accolades go to all of them. I hope you will have a chance to view this interview which is available here.
Thank you for your continued and genuine support. My career has been an incredible journey and it was made possible by you and everyone around me.
