We have all heard of the term Key Permanence Indicator (KPI), a management tool to measure performance and productivity. Plainly, these are established to determine the health of a business, and whether a staff is performing as required. Recently, I saw an excellent redefining of KPI which was refreshing and seemingly much more meaningful. This is thinking outside the box.
Instead of using KPIs to judge people, why not use these to help people and in return, help the business?
Keep People - INTERESTED
Keep People - INFORMED
Keep People - INVOLVED
Keep People - INSPIRED
What a novel idea!
We have already mentioned earlier the importance of the team towards business. The service they provide is first and foremost. Without them, there would be no business. If we all believe this, then why don’t we invest more and more in them? Managing the business means managing the people. Is there anything we would or should not do for them?
Keep People - INTERESTED
If your staff are interested in the business, in the product, in the guest, in themselves, then they will perform to meet this interest. So are we keeping them interested? Or do we manage on a “need-to-know” basis?
Keep People - INFORMED
None of us like to guess and if not informed, we are always guessing. Ambiguity is the cause of most downfalls. Why are we not open and transparent with our team? If they know why we ask them to do something, they will be more motivated to perform.
Keep People - INVOLVED
Do you remember when you were last neglected or omitted from an action or decision? How did it feel? The business is conducted by everyone in the company so everyone should be involved. Silo mentalities have ruined many a business. Break down the silos.
Keep People - INSPIRED
Many years ago, people did what they were told to do. Often, that was all, nothing more, nothing less. Today, people do what they are inspired to do, not what they are told to do. At all levels, inspiration is the key. If we cannot inspire people, we cannot manage them or the business.
Redefining KPIs in this manner seems much more appropriate with a chance for better results.
