Throughout my career, my ambition was to work hard and someday be a boss, be a leader. However, I also realized early in my career that believing it and wanting it is only the beginning. Am I capable of being not only a boss but a “remarkable” boss?
The journey to being a boss had several stops. Today I want to share with you some qualities of remarkable bosses that I learned along the way. No one gets to the top by themselves, they get there with the help of their team. Here are 5 qualities of remarkable bosses.
1. Develop Every Employee
Without great employees, no amount of focus on goals and targets will pay off. You cannot do it alone. Employees can only achieve what they can achieve, which requires skills, tools, understanding, and dedication. The boss is there to help his employees be capable, so they, and the business can achieve more. A remarkable boss devotes time and effort to providing much-needed training, mentoring, and opportunities to his employees. His employees deserve no less. He knows how important it is for his employees. If they succeed, he succeeds.
2. Deal with Problems Immediately
Problems, small or big never go away, they only fester and grow into bigger problems. One can try to sweep the problem under the carpet but eventually, the carpet becomes a big tripping hazard. When you ignore a problem, your employees immediately lose respect in you and without respect, you cannot lead. Remarkable bosses never hope a problem will go away, or that someone else will deal with it. Nothing kills team morale quicker than problems that do not get resolved.
3. Rescue your worst employee
Every boss has at least one employee who has fallen out of favor and seen by others as a “weak link.” He may try to rehabilitate himself but that is difficult because he seemingly gets no support. Instead of removing the weak link, remarkable bosses try to rescue that weak link. Remarkable bosses display confidence, are reassuring and step up the mentoring and coaching. A struggling employee has so much potential to improve. Some ask, is this employee worth saving? Remarkable bosses believe that you need not have to like the employee, but you owe it to yourself and to the employee to get the most out of him. Is he worth saving? Yes. After all, so much has already been invested in him.
4. Serve Others, not yourself
Remarkable bosses know that they can get away with being selfish or self-serving once or twice, but that is it. When your employees excel, you and your business excel. When there is a success, the team should be congratulated, not you. Never ask employees to do something that you would not do. When this happens, everyone knows how important you really are in the operation.
5. Always remember where you came from
To many employees, especially the new ones, you are slightly famous, in charge because you are the boss. That is why they want to spend a few moments with you whenever there is a chance. They value this attention. You can deny him, “Oh I am too busy,” or take advantage of the opportunity to inspire, reassure, and motivate. Take the time to give them hope for the future. Remarkable bosses remember they were there once. Though he is a star now, he is gracious with his stardom.
Remarkable bosses are not born, they are developed and nurtured. They learn to be remarkable.
